About our name
Sloe’s name is a nod to Joshua Slocum and a reaction to the go-faster-at-all-costs culture of modern racing. Part of the name Slocum is derived from the sloe berries,
We’re not trying to do something new. We’re trying to remember how good we had it when the beaches in South Texas stretched far with rainbow-colored sails. We’re trying to live up to the seamanship that kept sailors alive when crossing oceans in fierce conditions. We’re urging people to rediscover fun sails on slow boats with good friends, instead of practicing for the next time you’re in the protest room.
We love good boats. We love bomb proof gear. We love good racing and pushing boundaries. We love sailors who know their boats inside and out and can make them do remarkable things. There is plenty of room in sailing for that.
So go sailing just for fun. And take every opportunity to become a more proficient, safer sailor. Just be sure to take every opportunity to appreciate the magic of simply being out there. Go sailing with your friends and family such that you make core life memories just as often as personal bests at regattas. Sloe down.

Our ‘Always Out’ Gear philosophy
We design and build our gear to be used. We use it ourselves in Texas, where salt water, heat, sun, sand, rough docks, and hard use are baseline conditions. We build it with days offshore, long weekends of camping and beach launches, and unforgiving regattas like the Ruff Rider and GT300 in mind.
Our standards are high: make gear you can you can depend on and that will last. We’re hoping some of our gear will even be passed down to the next generation. Each piece of gear should earn its place in your kit, make your time on the water more enjoyable and safer, and look good. Who doesn’t want to look good at the beach?
Because the point of gear isn’t the gear. It’s being out there.
